GB4MIW – IMD

Sat 30April  2011  –    Marconi Day at Alum Bay GB4MIW

We were made very welcome at The Needles Pleasure Park for our usual Marconi weekend station, for which we are privileged to be able to work from the very site of Marconi’s experimental station in 1897.  We set up our gear in the awning of our club caravan, with the caravan sheltering us from the cold east wind so we could enjoy the sunshine.

We made 326 contacts, operating mostly on 40m although the band was very noisy at times. Most of the contacts on 40m were UK and European, including 32 stations using the special royal wedding GR/2R/MR callsign, but a portable station in Cuba got through on 40m.  Three operators worked late until 01:00 BST  and were rewarded with Venezuela, Guadeloupe and South Carolina all on 17m. On Sunday daytime conditions were good for working to the east and we made contact with UA9SGQ in Orenburg in Russia, 2360 miles away at 55°E 52°N, on 20m. We worked Canary Islands on 12m and 17m, and many stations in Finland on 20m.  We tried 2m for a while using a 13-element beam and got as far as Cwmbran.

Overall we had a very enjoyable weekend, de Doug M0DSF.
