The Orkney Wireless Museum was founded in April 1983 by the late Jim MacDonald (GM8BFG) after a lifetime passion in working with, and collecting all things electric. Named thus because it is essentially a local collection, and is an attempt to capture the evolution and swift passing of an intriguing era. Orkney’s wartime history is strongly represented in the Museum when, unbeknown to the general public at the time, an intense communications network involving radio and telephones was operating to protect the Home Fleet at Scapa Flow. A radar station was set up at Netherbutton in Orkney and equipped with top secret equipment. Many ex-servicemen and women visiting Orkney have enjoyed the wartime displays on show. Unfortunately, Jim died in April 1988 before he could enjoy the fruits of his work in retirement |
