The Volkswagen Scene
The show at Bad Camberg takes place every 4th year and 2007 was the 8th show to be held there.
The youngest vehicles on display in 2007 were I believe from 1957 and we were amazed by the quality of the cars and the very large number of very rare types such as the coachbuilts from Danenhauer & Stauss and Rometsch for example.
A group of us from the Club decided a year in advance that a trip to the show would be a good idea and in total 5 Split Screens, 2 Bays, 1 T4 and me in my T25 made the trip across the Channel through France,Belgium & The Netherlands to Germany. Unfortunately due to an oil cooler pipe leak and other problems with my just completed by Trevor T25, I missed the leg that would have seen me at the Wolfsburg Museum but never mind, I now know Europe a little better having driven back to Belgium and waiting there for the group to catch up.
We managed to get some good sight seeing days in too visiting Marksburg Castle, the best preserved 1200′s castle on the Rhine, a day trip on the Rhine visiting Boppard and other local attractions. Of course a visit to the booze hypermarket in Calais was on the books when we returned too.
Think I managed to photograph most of the vehicles at the event but did eventually stop taking pictures of the T1′s there were so many of them! unless the number plate was visual one began to look like another even though they all were there on individual merit.
I found the WW2 vehicles most interesting as you certainly don’t see many of them in the UK. The Czech registered Schwimmwagen was virtually immaculate as can be seen by the numerous photographs I took at first in the rain and then bathed in sunshine later in the day. I dread to contemplate the cost of getting the vecicle into its present state but certainly the owner can be very proud. The Black Kubelwagen was also an excellent example running on its desert tyres it certainly would not be a welcome visitor to the every day roads but a super thing to own.
There were actually 3 Schwimmwagens at the show and, on the way back to the campsite, we passed a 4th coming towards us on the road, quite a treat to see them. A similar number of Kubelwagens were there too. Also an original KDF Wagen T1, nice to see.
